The media are all about the Sri Lankan Tamil journalist from Sun FM who was kidnapped for 20 hours during which the whole time he was blindfolded. He was not harmed, nor were there any demands or ransom asked for.

First of all thank God for his safe release and I hope that he recovers without any emotional scarring. The freedom of speech is key to any democracy and any kind of attack against it is a shame.

Reading the various articles that are out there, I’m trying to string together what happened. According to Yahoo News which quoted Mr. Nadaraja Guruparan as saying:

“I was driving in my car, and another car cut in front of me. Five or six men came out with a pistol. Within two or three minutes I was in their car,”

The Lanka Academic also quotes Mr Nadaraja Guruparan as saying ,

“The first five hours were very difficult as they were quite rough,” he said. “But after 12 p.m., they started being friendly and asking me about my wife and family.”

Which brings to mind the immediate question of if he was blindfolded how he knew how much time had passed, and what time it was when they started being friendly towards him? The rational rebut to that statement would be maybe when they started being friendly he asked them the time.

Makes me wonder, if I was in that situation would I be worried about what time it was, or would I be more concerned about what was going to happen to me?

If I was being kidnapped would I be mentally geared to asking my kidnappers questions (such as the time) or be concentrated on answering their questions as well I could and on keeping alive.

It makes me wonder if there is something we don’t know in this story. Was this real and not staged for some unknown reason? This is Sri Lanka we’re discussing and it’s not something that has not happened before.
