CNN.com talks today about the worlds first ban on SKINNY models. I am heartened and gladdened by this. Let’s be very truthful to ourselves. Do you really think the supermodels of our day and age are pretty. They have long and gaunt faces made pretty by a ton of makeup. They starve themselves to almost death for stick like figures – err I mean bodies. You really can’t call what they have figures anymore.
Who wants a model that’s so thin that you can see her rib cage and her shoulder blades poking out every time she walks? That is not beauty. At least in my book; it’s not.
According to CNN.com:
Madrid’s fashion week has turned away underweight models after protests that girls and young women were trying to copy their rail-thin looks and developing eating disorders.
Madrid’s regional government, which sponsors the show and imposed restrictions, said it did not blame designers and models for anorexia. It said the fashion industry had a responsibility to portray healthy body images.“Fashion is a mirror and many teenagers imitate what they see on the catwalk,” said regional official Concha Guerra.
The mayor of Milan, Italy, Letizia Moratti, told an Italian newspaper this week she would seek a similar ban for her city’s show unless it could find a solution to “sick” looking models.

I strongly believe in a healthy looking body. Beauty is something that is not equal to having a 12 inch waist and broomstick thin legs. That my dear public, and I’m very sorry to remove the wool that has been obviously covering your eyes for so long is an anomaly and something that needs to be treated.
Let’s look at some of the “HOT” models strutting their “stuff” on the catwalk these days. Err some of you might be asking the question, WHAT STUFF. They are stick thin, and have no figures, no breasts what so ever to talk about, and certainly no ass to boot. I’m sure this statement will strike some as one coming from a chauvinistic male. Please don’t misunderstand me. I have nothing against women who are smaller made and I’m not saying that if you have small breasts you should get implants.
What I am against is the fashion industry trying to sell a particular look above all and say this is what beauty is. Everything else is below that.
If we look at male models they are well built, and healthy looking, not rain thin and look as if a bit of monsoon wind might blow them off their feet. So why the double standard when it comes to women.
The fashion industry sets a standard to a very large percentage of the population in the world. I think that since it has such a powerful voice, it needs to act responsibly and portray an image of healthy beauty.
Well as you can guess I just loved it (The above mentoned article) ! LOL
I personally don’t consider super-models beautiful, they are often masculine in my eyes.. and I don’t think too many men find them attractive either. (this may be wishful thinking of course)
Anyway, it is plain horrendous that those skinny models are something too many young girls look up to and feel the need to imitate them.
Women face every day the enormous pressure to look pretty, which is unfortunate as such, but at least they should have the right to look pretty in their own personal way – whether they are skinny, chubby, tall or short.
Oh and it is stupid and amusing that fashion industry uses those models since the majority of women are not tall neither skinny – shouldn’t they try to sell their clothes to all kinds of women?
Well here here to that………..
We all have bones, it’s just most of us wear them on the inside of our bodies LOL
If painfully thin is how you want to be with all the complications that more often than not go with it, then feel free to do so, but it’s so important no to make our young ladies and gentlemen , who are our future so insecure about body image.
Life is complicated enough with adding to it.
get those skinny yucky nasty skeletons off the run way!!! bolimec
I’m hoping this will start a new trend towards more normal-looking models. I’ve always felt that women with their ribs prominently showing just look like they are anorexic, not beautiful.
In the fashion industry’s defense, it’s evidently a LOT easier to design clothes for rail-thin women than voluptuous ones. I have a friend who is a fashion designer and she wanted to design great clothes for plus size women, but since fat deposits itself in different ways on different people, for a proper fit you basically have to custom make the clothes for each individual.
I guess this is true to a lesser degree for more normal-sized people. If you get a more busty girl, making things fit properly over her boobs and hips while still being defining enough on the rest of her is going to be more of an issue.
But I think the extra effort would be worth it; the resulting clothes would be more beautiful because of the people wearing them. I know I’d certainly rather see women who looked like women on the catwalks, in any case.
Good post mate. It’s about time people actually realize the practicality of life, and what actually out there in the real world. Fancy how soo many girls yearn to be some one they’re not, not realizing their inner self and the beauty they carry with them. I hope this is a turning point in the industry.
Well, I’m personally not a big fan of skinny girls either, basically I like some ‘jelly on me toast’. But coupla things to note. One is that not all super models are extra skinny. Some of the biggest super models of the new generation like Alessandra Ambrosio, Adriana Lima and Heidi Klum are anything but skeletons. The other is that fashion designing and presenting one’s designs is a form of art, and I think the artiste should have the discretion to use what ever medium he or she prefers to present what he or she created.
hey Spectral, i agree with you on that the artist should be able be given the discretion to choose his/her medium of expression, but, when you have the ability to influence millions of people, i think its a gross understatement to take a sample of what 0.00001% of the people look like and say, this is what beauty is.
True, there are models out there that have healthy figures, but there are not enough. the preference is for rail thin women on the catwalk.
I really hope the era of boyish shaped models is over.
I mean some of them really look starved or on crack, either way they look unhealthy, which is not attractive at all. I’ll take a voluptuous curvy woman any day.
It is about time. Now if we could just teach them to walk properly instead of placing their feet directly in-line and lose the phony wiggle we might actually get rid of this anorexic mental disorder and save a few lives.
If only they where actually influcing fat people.
I actually find skinny models sexy! Bone showing on the chest makes me go wow!
hmmm well spider.. i guess to each his own. For me i like a nice soft pair of breasts on a womans chest anyday
One of London’s big model agencies have just announced they will start publishing BMI index figures for their models – hurray!
http://www.capelondon.com – Cape London Model Management
i dont agree. i think models nowadays are gorgeous. admittedly there will occasionallly be one with an earting disorder who looks awful, but the majority is stunning.
its the retards who copy them who are to blame
tell me this, if curves are so beautiful why are these kids giving themselves disorders to get rid of them?
models are coathangers. they make the clothes look hot. try putting a curvy girl in one of those outfits. it would be gross. they arent role models and none of them are asking to be copied.
fat girls can be hot too. but not as models
With great power comes great responsibility… The industry has great power to make a difference in how people think. They should not treat that lightly.
The fat girls are the only ones happy about it.maybe they should fatten up their self-esteem before trying to fatten-up everyone else!!
I believe the reason that there are double standards for female catwalk models is, that the majority of the fashion industry is conducted by homosexual older males, (i have nothing against gays at all) but they do like the look of boys, not girls.
This goes with the fact that clothes look better on a coathanger, and like other people were saying about it being easier to design clothes for these models.
But, something did go horribly wrong in the catwalk model industry. When did people who look close to death become attractive?
you know what. like whoever said. its a form of art the designers should get to use WHOEVER THEY WANT! I mean. I mean people also paint and sculpt thin women! why not get rid of those and then while were at it get rid of all the naked paintings!
hmm not to mention practically every other art. might as well hang up blank canvases and shoot every anorexic model for chrissake!
i think thin models luk beaut…reli stunnin… bt theres thin and skin and bone…women hv to hv a bit of meat…not sayin curvy but they need to look like the take pride in their appearance rather than concentrating on starving themselves…i personaly im not happy with my body and am quite obsessed with changin it to b skinnier..i am a size 8/10 but when i c these models i look at myself as big rather than thin…
there definately should be different sizes of models
I stand at 5’9″ inches tall. I weigh 114 lbs. Everyone in my family is tall and skinny. I am sorry that you consider something that you’re not ugly. To be perfectly honest all body shapes and sizes are beautiful. Just because you aren’t a size zero pant doesn’t give you the right to come down on people that are. Jealousy is pointless. Everyone should love themselves. JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE NOT TALL AND THIN AND HAVE LOW SELF ESTEEM DOESN’T GIVE YOU THE RIGHT TO CALL PEOPLE WHO LOOK LIKE ME UGLY AND “SO NEAR DEATH.” Grow up. Gain esteem. Then form an opinion about other people. Other people’s body types are none of your business.
What now?
Skinny bitches strike back
Hey, Being thin doesnt say your annorexic.
Im also a model, and i learnt from a topmodel to eat healthy. but NEVER skip a meal.
If you eat healthy and sport your perfect for the runways.
Damn straight!
thankyou tessa, and ann
i know so many people who are skinny and eat complete shit all the time. my bmi is a bit under 16 and i just ate two chocolate bars and two slices of toast in about two hours.
and bear in mind that these people are all like 5,10”, theyd have to eat shitloads to not be skinny.
people get in so much shit for this ‘fat people discrimination’, but the only people being targeted and blamed are the people who are thin.
please remember being overweight is just as dangerous as being underweight.
even if skinny models were banned people with eating disorders would find someone for ‘thinspiration’
people are just so jealous. if skinnys so ugly and curvys so gorgeous, why are all the curvy people so obsessed with bringing down the thin people?
I have always been worried about how i look, i am a size 8 but have a big chest which doesnt help as i am so improportioned and have a horrible battle with girls in my skool as i am now in my last year, they all say im too fat and should lose weight, it really worries me but when i see these super models it just upsets me how they can be so thin and i cant be. I know it is stupid to see their rips sticking out and shoulder blades hanging out but i think if the fashion industry wanted to show beauty they should put regular women on there. Most women arn’t size 0 or 6f. So why do they show the clothes for people who arn’t that size? Are they meant to be promoting clothes for women? Well how can they if they cant wear them? It has set such an awful image for women on how to look. They think beauty is just on the cover of a magazine and thats how everyone should look (i should know) its total bullshit. The thing women think men think is beautiful is a skinny girl, but every guy i know likes a woman with curves and a chest. Women just think that women should be skinny or their not beautiful
just why do the skinny girls always try to pull down the curvy girls…
Skinny is healthy….curvy is fat and filled with poisens from the food you eat. I know, I am a blob. I can;t even spell correctly. These models are what all women should look like. Skinnier the better. Better girls learn in their teens to not trun out like fat curvy pigs or blobs like myself.

Alondra u have to read this.
how can u even say that about yourself?!?! being size 0 is not healthy! dont get me wrong i seriously wouldnt mind being thinner but how could u even say that about yourself?
I think its ridiculous the amount of people that say skinny is a bad thing, everyone is so quick to judge when they see a skinny model or even just someone walking down the street. Like someone said above, not all skinny girls are anorexic or have eating disorders…some people are just naturally like that, like myself. I am actually really offended by what people say about skinny people because a lot of people are lke me and get catagorised as ‘anerexic’ when we’re not..to be honest i probably eat more fast food in larger quantities than many many people. Some people are fat…skinny people dont go around saying ‘I THINK IT’S DIGUSTING’ because thats just not how it works, if you are to offend a larger person, it’s seen as rude..if someone was to say something about how i look, its acceptable because its as though ive made myself like this which is unacceptable because i spend most my time worrying about how i look and wanting to put on weight. Just deal with it
Some people are skinny some people are fat, not all skinny people stave themselves or eat carefully for that matter..it’s just the way it is for some people.
I cannot stand how judgemental some people can be.
I like thin women. In fact, I think most people do, but political correctness keeps us from saying so and we all have to pretend that fat is ok.
I Love Skinny Chicks!! And I’m not ashamed to say it!
Love ‘em love ‘em love ‘em. Thin is IN.
I spent my childhood being taunted by other children because of my skinny, skinny, ugly weight. I do not believe skinny is beautiful. I would rather be Monroe than Moss for sure.
omgggggggggggggg you people are sick in the head. just be happy with who you are. woooow! all of you people need to go read a book or something. ew.
Yeesh, I’m sorry all of you are fat and they’re not.
Ummm have any of you considered that any of these models are NATURALLY skinny?
My relatives are extremely tall and skinny and they eat whatever they want. My brother is 6’2 and 110 pounds and I am a size 0. My dad as a kid COULDN’T gain weight.
Yeah, some models have eating disorders but dont call ALL skinny models ugly because some of them look really good naturally petite.
I didnt read through all of this, but some of the comments really got me thinking. I am not fat at all, 50 kilos, size 8. Some of these girls are almost dead just to fit in these clothes. They look terrible, they are bad for the youth to look up to, and becoming a common problem with kids, boys and girls and from a very early age. I feel sorry for these girls thinking that they have to get to the point of almost death to feel attractive. Its not fat women wanting the rest of the world to be fat too, its concern for youth, and the message that is being sent out. I think that people that feel that its attactive should keep it to themselves, its a dangerous message your sending out.
Now honestly, is this attractive, and do you think all organs are still working properly: http://www.tcnj.edu/~hofmann/humor/Misc/Skinny.htm
no, dont say all super models…
Victoria’s Secret has decent models…yes they are thin…but not to the extreme
This post is absolutely disgusting. I mean, talk about chauvinism! Who are you to say that certain women are unattractive because they are born thinner than average? It’s awful that you think it’s O.K. to degrade a women because she doesn’t have a large chest.
On another note, as others have mentioned, you have no proof that these poor young women have a problem. It’s not only unfair to say that they have an eating disorder because they are thin, but it’s also dishonest.
On a personal note, I agree with James Riskejame in that most men prefer thin women. They don’t look “boy-ish”, as they are very petite and delicate.
woman should be fit but not skinny. they shold have a normal chest and not a flat gross one. and they shold look like WOMAN not like some little sick boy. some thin and skinny chicks were born this way! some have more havy body type! but if you are a about 90 or less Lbs-you arn’t sexy if your more than 180-you arn’t sexy as well!
be fit and lady like!
The perfect women- joli, and monore!
I don’t see how people think it is okay to ban skinny models form the catwalk but in plus size shows and what not they allow overweight women to be in those shows and they are just as unhealthy as the size 0 girls
im skinny but i do have a booty and boobs. that doesnt mean im fat and it doesnt mean im anorexic. i think models should be there “happy weight” where they are healthy and just a tad bit of meat on the bones. i am an aspering model who thinks anorexia/bulima is gross and unhealthy. i would know; i once was both. models should be happy about how they look, i mean they most be beautiful enough already, i mean they get paid to walk on a runway and look hot. models should be healthy looking.
I’m really glad they are starting to ban unhealthily skinny models, because I think it shows a very bad example to us teenagers.
I am 15 and I have a friend the same age who thinks she is fat and wants to be like the models she sees in the magazines, but the problem is she is perfect the way she is, she is really slim! and it makes me sad to see her get upset about her weight for no reason!
Also I am 5 ft 10 and slim, I would like to be a model but I think I am to big compared to the very skinny models I see on the catwalk and I’m only a size 8/10!
So I’m all the way for bigger models!
GO SIZE 10! WOOOO! LOL
i think it is just as mean to talk badly about skinny models (or women) as it would be to talk badly about overweight models (or women). i happen to be a very skinny woman, and have been my entire life. i’m 5’11” and the most i have ever weighed is 137 lbs- that was huge for me! i eat all the time, love to cook, and love to eat, but i have an incredibly fast metabolism and so i can almost never gain weight. i modelled for a while, and i find it hurtful to talk about all skinny women as if they have some kind of defect and/or eating disorder. there ARE many women in the world who are just naturally very, VERY thin. we shouldn’t be made to feel any less attractive to men than any other woman, in the same sense that overweight women should not be made to feel unattractive for their size. we all have different body types; let’s just accept each of us as we are!
I think they shud keep tha thin models on tha catwalk its true they look good and the clothes fall nicely on them . wen i see a bigger sized model it does not look right no offence but it looks stupied and yuck . its always been thin and it shud stay that way.
KEEP THA THIN MODELS ON THA RUNWAY !!!!!!
i will be upset if it changes .
