Watermelon

On a nice hot day there is nothing quite as refreshing as biting into a juicy slice of watermelon. Depending on my mood I do prefer the seed type. Even though this can drastically reduce the speed at which you can eat your slice it does introduce a certain fun factor into eating a watermelon in a group. The inevitable seed fight.

Fruits in TokyoThis is all well and dandy when you’re paying a reasonable amount of money for that melon your furiously munching into, but what if you had just paid $6,100 it. Would you eat it with the same gusto? If it were me I would frame it and store it away in some bank vault. That being said, in the land of the rising sun the watermelon or at least some varieties of it is a prized possession indeed. They are a luxury that indicates status and wealth. This is the story of the black skinned watermelon.

The 17-pound, black-skinned “Densuke” watermelon, a variety grown only on the northern island of Hokkaido, was purchased Friday by a marine products dealer who said he wanted to support local agriculture, according to Kyodo News agency.

Its 97 degrees outside and I just had a hot steaming cup of tea

Am I crazy? No, Just Sri Lankan. By all means given the heat wave we’ve been having here in the bay area I should be sipping on an ice cold lemonade or an iced milo for those who know what that is [Flashback memories of pillawoos], but no; I have to choose a hot cup of milk tea.

Cup of tea - WikipediaThere is something comforting about drinking a hot cup of tea, even on the hottest of days. I really can’t point my finger on it but there is. Just the aroma of tea is enough to get me yearning for a cup. It does not matter what time of day it is.

One of my favorite times of the day was going to the road side ‘cafe’ pillawoose in Sri Lanka at 11.30 or so in the night. Sitting on the steps of the neighboring store and ordering a hot cup of plain tea with ginger or sometimes a slice of lemon in it. Its absolutely wonderful. Why? i don’t know. it just is.

I’ve been tagged

So it seems that I have been tagged by Kanabona

The rules of the game is as follows:

  • Link your tagger and list these rules on your blog.
  • Share 7 facts about yourself on your blog, some random, some weird.
  • Tag 7 people at the end of your post by leaving their names as well as links to their blogs.
  • Let them know they have been tagged by leaving a comment on their blog.

7 Things about me that no one is really interested in knowing :-)

  • I am a photographer. My equipment of choice is a Canon 40D and you can see some of my pictures here
  • I love food. Like any Sri Lankan, good food is something to get excited about. There is nothing like a good steak or leg of lamb roasted to perfection
  • I’m lazy and am quite happy surfing the internet for random bits of information that I think is interesting or out taking a hundred gazzilion pictures of a rock formation
  • I am a user experience designer by profession
  • I like Yani and Kitaro. Deal with it
  • I am a HUGE fantasy buff. Not the tech out of space type fantasy but the type involving magicians and ancient kingdoms and sorcery etc… I am very picky about my fantasy. [Why does that just sound wrong!]
  • I love comics and Anime. Tin TIn, Asterix, and Naruto to name a few

Ahh and the list has ended. I’m sure there are more if i pick my brain enough but the list allows me no more.

Now for the hard part. Who do I TAG. it seems like almost everyone has already been tagged, but let me give it a try.

I know some of you have already been tagged but ohhh well. Cheers!

Spring Time and Spring Flowers

I took this picture walking around Cupertino in Northern California. Having moved to North California a few months before winter hit the rest of the country, I looked at the greenery around me and though that this must be what it would be year round. Everything looks so lush and green compared to the east coast where I’d be looking at dried up sticks and twigs for 4-5 months out of the year.

I was in for a surprise. Come spring the gardens around me started to blossom and give color to what was already a lush green background to start with. The result is that every time I walk though a residential area, especially in an area like Palo Alto, I feel like I’m walking though the Botanical Gardens. I’m greeting with a rainbow of roses and flowers of all types and form and scents.

I hope you enjoy this picture.

I love the deep intensity of the blue in the background and jelly fish look so awesome. isn’t it ironic that the most beautiful objects are the most deadly in this world?

Underwater Palm Trees

Underwater Palm Trees

A hammock, nice chilled lemonade and the sounds of the ocean beating on the beach. Seems like your in heaven. ohh wait, we missed a major part of this equation. The palm trees swaying in the breeze. There is something about about the sight of palm trees that just make you think of tropical islands where people don’t have a worry in the world.

Apparently the same applies for the underwater world. I captured these underwater palm trees at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Absolutely wonderful!
