YouTube is changing the way we learn

Do you know how to make cheese? Do you know how to hang dry wall? Do you know how to move a pool table? How about your favorite curry?

I didn’t but Now I do. Not only do I know how to do these things, but I know multiple ways of doing each of these things and the pro’s and con’s of each method. I’ve also been empowered to take the best of each technique and come up with my own. All thanks for YouTube.

When ever I needed to do something that I did not know, I turned to the Internet. I read tutorials about the topic in question, and in the recent past watched online video tutorials and learned everything about it. I am never happy with just reading one article or just watching one tutorial. I usually read multiple articles and watch multiple video’s on the same thing by different people. This allows me to learn from many teachers. Learn each ones techniques, and come up with my own best of all worlds way of doing it.

I was doing this without really realizing what I was doing until I came across one particular video of cheese being made in a remote location in Europe (I think) http://youtu.be/I4LNS7F_-DM. This was during my quest to learn how to make the perfect cheese. While watching the lady made cheese the way she was taught and using a method that was probably handed down from generation to generation. There may be a easier/better way to make this cheese but that knowledge is not easily accessible to her, but because I have access to a resource such as YouTube, I can learn from multiple people and find the best way to make this cheese. Thats when I realized how empowered resources like YouTube has made me. How it has changed the way we learn and how accessible it has made knowledge to us. Video is a much more effective learning medium than a plain text article (like this blog post :) )

It is the same way with skilled trades. The traditional way is to apprentice with a master of the trade. Learn his/her ways and carry out the tradition. There is “one way” that you learn to do something and you continue doing it that way even if there is a better way of doing it because that is all you know; Unless your experiment on your own. This is now changing rapidly.

I would love to hear how you have noticed you life changed by online resources of this nature.

I’ve been tagged

So it seems that I have been tagged by Kanabona

The rules of the game is as follows:

  • Link your tagger and list these rules on your blog.
  • Share 7 facts about yourself on your blog, some random, some weird.
  • Tag 7 people at the end of your post by leaving their names as well as links to their blogs.
  • Let them know they have been tagged by leaving a comment on their blog.

7 Things about me that no one is really interested in knowing :-)

  • I am a photographer. My equipment of choice is a Canon 40D and you can see some of my pictures here
  • I love food. Like any Sri Lankan, good food is something to get excited about. There is nothing like a good steak or leg of lamb roasted to perfection
  • I’m lazy and am quite happy surfing the internet for random bits of information that I think is interesting or out taking a hundred gazzilion pictures of a rock formation
  • I am a user experience designer by profession
  • I like Yani and Kitaro. Deal with it
  • I am a HUGE fantasy buff. Not the tech out of space type fantasy but the type involving magicians and ancient kingdoms and sorcery etc… I am very picky about my fantasy. [Why does that just sound wrong!]
  • I love comics and Anime. Tin TIn, Asterix, and Naruto to name a few

Ahh and the list has ended. I’m sure there are more if i pick my brain enough but the list allows me no more.

Now for the hard part. Who do I TAG. it seems like almost everyone has already been tagged, but let me give it a try.

I know some of you have already been tagged but ohhh well. Cheers!

Thunder and lightning

I heard thunder and saw lightening last night! How amazing!!!

People tend to miss the strangest of things when not exposed to it. I mean, who would have thought that thunder and lightning were things to miss?

Sri Lanka had some of the best thunder and lightning out there. New York had some occasional breakouts that might have caused a tiny tot to crawl under the bed, but since moving out west I have not heard a single rumble since last night. YAY! I finally feel at home.

It’s one of those things that just make everything else seem weird when it’s not there. I really don’t quite know how else to explain it.
